Dr Rajesh Dhakal is a Professor of Structural and Earthquake Engineering at University of Canterbury and a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) in New Zealand.
He received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Nepal (with gold medal), Master of Structural Engineering from AIT Thailand (with gold medal) and PhD from the University of Tokyo. Prof Dhakal’s research interests are in performance based earthquake engineering and seismic design of reinforced concrete structures. He has authored more than 300 technical papers in different aspects of structural and earthquake engineering.
He has served as an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, and is currently the Chief Editor of the Bulletin of the NZSEE and serves in the Editorial Board of four other international journals.
Prof Dhakal has received multiple awards including the 2011 IPENZ President’s award for his contribution to the post-earthquake recovery in NZ, the prestigious EQC-NZSEE Ivan Skinner award for advancement of earthquake engineering research in NZ, and NZSEE Otto-Glogau award three times (2007, 2011 and 2017) for publishing outstanding technical papers in the field of earthquake engineering.
